Advanced Young Artists @ Arthouse from Arthouse at the Jones Center on Vimeo.
Initiated in January 2010, Advanced Young Artists @Arthouse (AYAA) offers a mentor-guided, in-depth exploration of a specific visual art discipline to veterans of Young Artists @ Arthouse (YAA).
Started in 2006, YAA is a studio-based artistic skill development program focusing on portfolio growth and careers in the visual arts for Austin-area high school students, often from Title 1 schools, with little or no access to advanced visual arts classes. YAA and AYAA are FREE for participants and arts supplies are provided along with transportation. Over 105 teens have participated in YAA since its inception.
AYAA participants will propose a project and be paired with an Austin-area professional artist or graduate student who will serve as that student’s mentor throughout the semester. Artist-mentors and Arthouse Education Coordinator, Erin Gentry will provide guidance in artistic skill development and idea expression. The teens will also visit artists’ studios, other museums and gallery exhibitions, lectures, performances, etc. Additionally, participants will receive individual counseling on college, internships, and career planning. Rarely do interested students receive arts-focused counseling in this manner.
The program culminates with a group exhibition of the students' artwork, alongside the work of their Artist-mentors. Participants will be responsible for all aspects of the exhibition, including installation and publicity, under the guidance of Arthouse staff and the Artist-mentors. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication with general information about the program, as well as photographic documentation of each project and artists’ statements.
