Advanced Young Artists: Pilot Semester Success

May 24th, 2010 · 1 Comment

For Arthouse, 2010 truly is a year of firsts. To start, we’ve just concluded season 1 of the Arthouse Visiting Lecturer Series and Studio Visit Program, survived our first (and fingers crossed only) off-site FIVE X SEVEN extravaganza, and all of this while eagerly awaiting our much anticipated renovation and expansion at 700 Congress Avenue this fall.

Some of Arthouse’s most important work, however, often goes on outside of the public sphere. With a generous grant from the Webber Family Foundation, Arthouse was able to launch a major new addition to our coveted teen programs: Advanced Young Artists at Arthouse. Building off of Young Artists @ Arthouse, AYAA partners exemplary students with working Austin-area artists for a semester-long collaborative mentorship process resulting in a final review and exhibition of new work. Beyond the premise, which is AWESOME, there are two main facets of the program that make it really incredible:

1) Students write the proposal that determines the arc and trajectory of their artistic growth. Mentors are assigned using accepted proposals as a starting point and guideline for qualifications. Students are invested and therefore driven by their own initiative.

2) The budget is realistic. Mentors receive stipends for their semester-long commitment, and students receive adequate funding with which to purchase supplies. The result: amibitous students can push themselves to realize ambitious work, and exhibit it.
